How is this secure?

When you click "Check":

  1. Your password is computationally hashed into a SHA-1 fingerprint locally in your browser.
  2. Only the first 5 characters of that hash (the "prefix") are sent to the HaveIBeenPwned API.
  3. The API responds with hundreds of known leaked hashes starting with those 5 characters.
  4. Your browser locally compares the rest of your hash to the API's returned list.

Result: Your actual password—and even its full hash—are never transmitted over the internet.
